Established in 2012 by Ken Yankowski, the aptly named Yankowski Vineyard is planted to Graciano, Mourvedre, Grenache, and Tempranillo. The vineyard sits in a deep saddle of pure calcareous shale, which faces south, providing particularly special conditions for growing delicious fruit. We exclusively purchase the Graciano and Mourvedre and coferment them, as they are great complements to each other with their contrasting chemistry. The Golden Road has tons of black fruit notes (blackberry, black currant, and plum) along with savory notes of black licorice and chaparral.
The Graciano and Mourvedre were picked on October 6th and, upon reaching the winery, were sorted 100% whole cluster into 1.5-ton bins. To be respectful of the origins of Graciano and the Spanish heritage of Mourvedre, the fruit was inoculated with a Rioja selected yeast. After a 15 day fermentation, the wine was pressed to neutral French barrels and aged for 14 months prior to bottling.
