Paix Sur Terre

2016 The Golden Road

2016 The Golden Road

Planted in 2012 by Ken Yankowski and Gayle Weeks, the aptly named Yankowski-Weeks Vineyard is planted to Graciano, Mourvedre, Grenache and Tempranillo.   The vineyard sits in a deep saddle of pure calcareous shale, which faces south, providing particularly special conditions for growing delicious fruit.  The saddle is so deep the vines receive more shade in the early morning and late afternoon than normally occurs on a south facing exposure.  We exclusively purchase the Graciano and Mouvredre and coferment them, as they are great complements to each other with their contrasting chemistry.  This wine has tons of black fruit notes (blackberry, black current and plum) along with savory notes of black licorice, red wine reduction and chaparral.

The Graciano and Mourvedre were picked on September 24th and sorted 100% whole cluster into 1.5 ton bins upon reaching the winery.  The fruit was inoculated with a Rioja selected yeast to be respectful of the origins of the Graciano and the Spanish heritage of Mourvedre.  After a 15 day fermentation the wine was pressed to neutral French barrels and aged for 14 months before bottling.
