SONGS OF ITS OWN
45% Grenache, 35% Mourvedre, 17% Syrah, 3% Cinsaut
Our third vintage of Songs of its Own, the 2014, includes 6 different clones of Rhone varietals encompassing every section of the property. The mix includes Shiraz from the original block, Grenache A from the Ridgeline, Cinsaut from the Pipeline and Mourvedre, Grenache Blanc and Grenache A from the Summit.
The Grenache Noir, Grenache Blanc, Syrah 99, and Cinsaut were cofermented with 50% whole cluster. The Mourvedre and Shiraz were incorporated after three months and the final blend spent 12 months in neutral oak.
THE OTHER ONE
The Other One is a barrel selection of our most site specific, age worthy and mineral driven barrels of Glenrose Mourvedre. The 2014 The Other One showcases the highest percentage of the lower terraces of Mourvedre at Glenrose to date. The lower terraces had such minerality, depth and structure I felt they needed to show more presence; helping to balance out the bright elements of the Mourvedre from the upper terraces. In the end, I feel I have achieved a wine that evokes a sense of place with the upmost clarity.
The Mourvedre from the upper and lower terraces were picked within two days of each other on September 18th and 20th. The fruit was 100% whole cluster fermented and raised in 85% neutral oak and 15% new French oak.
COMES A TIME
Alta Colina Vineyard
The Mourvedre at Alta Colina sits atop a plateau of silicious shale at 1,800’ elevation. It is a very special place, lovingly cared for by the Tillman family. It is really simple why we love working with this fruit; the soils are sensational and the fruit is unbelievably well cared for. After several years of transitioning to dry farming we are finally getting a very consistent profile of leather and cumin from this fruit. This young vineyard is just beginning to show its true character.
The Mourvedre at Alta Colina was picked on September 25th and fully destemmed. After fermentation the wine was racked into neutral French oak barrels and aged for 14 months.
EITHER SIDE OF THE HILL
85% Syrah, 15% Mourvedre
Walking through the original planting of Syrah at Glenrose is a very special experience. There is a sense of something special, a beginning that lead to far greater things than anyone could have imagined. Planted in 1994, 2014 marked the 20th anniversary of the start of Glenrose Vineyard, and this was the fruit that got it all started. Don planted this block when I was 10 years old, long before Rhone varietals were a known commodity. Don was adamant that this was the most important pick to date for him as it signified a very special moment in his life. No pressure at all!
Picked on August 14th the Syrah was fermented in two separate bins, one destemmed and the other 25% whole cluster. The Mourvedre was blended in after 3 months to add length and earth tones. Raised in a mix of French oak barrels, about 85% neutral and 15% new, Either Side of the Hill spent 14 months in barrel.
Kiler Grove Vineyard
Production Notes: Ugni Blanc is the most widely planted white varietal in the Mediterranean and is a large component of the crisp and minerally whites of Provence. Typically planted on windswept limestone slopes in south France the one-acre planting at Kiler Grove in West Paso Robles is no different; planted on the highest, windswept limestone slope the site produces fruit that evokes the fresh herbs, salty air, and sunshine that dominate the smells of Provence.
Picked on August 28th at 21.8 brix, the fruit was whole cluster pressed and racked into stainless Muellers and neutral French oak barrels. All barrel fermented, the Ugni Blanc was aged in 75% stainless and 25% neutral oak barrels and will be released in March, 2015.
