Songs of its Own
58% Grenache, 30% Mourvedre, 12% Syrah
Production Notes:The first Grenache based cuvée from Paix Sur Terre; this wine is intended to be a field blend of Glenrose Vineyard. Grenache will always play the leading role and from year to year this blend may include Tablas clones Syrah 99, Grenache A, Mourvedre A, and Counoise along with Cinsault and Shiraz clone 7. The fruit for Songs of its Own was fermented on 50% whole cluster and racked into neutral oak barrels. The final blend was assembled just two months after harvest and spent 12 months in neutral barrels as a finished cuvée.
Tasting Notes: The Grenache A is planted on high limestone terraces on the summit of Glenrose and has incredibly pure red fruit notes of strawberry and kirsch with hints of coriander, thyme, and garrigue. The Mourvedre A at the top of the summit lends its flavors of black cherry, baking spices and saline qualities. Shiraz clone 7 provides meatiness, sweet lavender notes, and chalky mineral flavors. The palate is juicy and mouthwatering and will provide great drinking pleasure over the next 10 years.
The Other One
Production Notes: The third release of our flagship wine is a best barrel blend of Glenrose Vineyard Mourvedre. The 15-year-old Mourvedre vines from the upper terraces had gorgeously ripe stems in 2012 so we fermented two lots, one 50% whole cluster and the other 100% whole cluster. This wine was aged in 85% neutral and 15% new French oak barrels. The final blend is 85% whole cluster and shows a whole new level of Glenrose minerality.
Tasting Notes: This is quintessential Mourvedre from Glenrose Vineyard with aromatic notes of black cherry, plum, Peking duck, hoisin sauce, cumin and sage. The deep mid palate is accented by flavors of black currant, plum sauce, and Marionberry pie. Savory hints of licorice, cumin, Chinese 5 spice, sweet new leather, and garrigue give this Mourvedre an incredible array of flavors. The spicy, chalky, mouthwatering finish lingers forever. Drink over the next 10 years.
Either Side of the Hill
70% Syrah, 30% Mourvedre
Production Notes: The Syrah for Either Side of the Hill comes from the first planting on the property, 19-year old Syrah vines planted in 1994. This Syrah typically yields only 1.5-2 tons/acre of incredibly ripe, acidic, fresh fruit. The Syrah was picked September 4th, fully destemmed and fermented on native yeasts. The final blend was assembled two months later as 30% Mourvedre was added from the upper terraces for grip and earthiness. Either Side of the Hill was aged 12 months in 85% neutral and 15% new French oak barrels.
Tasting Notes: Highly aromatic with hints of blackberry, mission fig, blueberries, cherry blossoms and roast meats. The fruit flavors of boysenberry and black current are met with savory notes of lilac, violets, white pepper, a jus and chalk. The texture is focused and silky with a long and chewy finish. Drink over the next 6-8 years
